Sustainable Practices for Vegetable Production in the South by Mary Peet (Focus Publishing, R. Pullins Co., P.O. Box 369, Newburyport MA 01950; 1996). The author, a teacher and researcher in the Horticulture Science Department at North Carolina State University, learned about sustainable agriculture practices and wanted to introduce them in her Vegetable Production course. However, she was unable to find materials for growing conditions specific to the southern part of the country. This book is her attempt to fill that gap, with information from both local small-scale growers already using the concepts, and research results from southern region universities. The book presents Sustainable Production Practices, Integrated Pest Management and profiles of specific southern crops. The book is informative and easy to read and contains many tables that should prove useful to the southern grower.

Amazon Herb Company/Vital Strategies, an enterprise in rainforest preservation and global nutrition (Arthur Atkinson, Vital Strategies, LC, P.O. Box 493, Fairfield IA 52556; (800) 590-2072; vitalstrategies@globalverde.com: http://Vitalstrategies.com.amazonherb.net; sells wild botanicals from the rainforests of the Amazon, sustainably harvested by the company’s indigenous partner communities. All purchases support the preservation of the Amazon rainforest.
